The Dead Beatle
Wednesday, June 20, 2007, 07:55 PM - Music, - US, English
I got a message from Alleee of Mondo Diablo. My Silly Beatles post inspired her to make a podcast with some of my shared music. She combined it with a lot of other worthwhile Beatles covers and a radio broadcast of a syndicated special detailing the Paul is Dead phenomenon, which is a funny idea: Paul is with Ringo the only Beatle who survived. The radio recording can be found on the 365 Days Project.
Alleee had so much material, she made two podcasts out of it: Two hours of silly Beatles and even sillier comments.

And while you are there, try the other episodes, they all have nice surprises.

Gil Trythall - Luxikon II/Echospace (1980, US, electronic)
Thursday, May 31, 2007, 09:37 PM - Music, - US, English
Original music from the man who covered lots of country hits on his moog: Country Moog & Nashville Gold. Thanks to Vasco who sent me this gem.
Both compositions were made for a dance performance.
Principal instrumentation includes: Moog IIIc modular, two interconnected Micromoogs, EML 400 Sequencer, Multivox Analog Echo and a Farfisa combo organ.

Gabor Szabo - Nightflight (1976, HU/US, smooth jazz)
Thursday, May 10, 2007, 03:36 PM - Music, - HU, - US, English
Jazz purists hate this record. They have problems with soul and disco producer Bunndino Siggalucci (Bunny Sigler). I think it's his best album. Beautiful sound, relaxing tunes and excellent guitar playing. Never released on cd; shame!
Music to crash by...

Side one:
1 Concorde (Nightflight) [6:48]
2 Funny Face [3:04]
3 Baby Rattle Snake [6:50]
4 Theme for Gabor [4:31]

Side two:
1 Keep Smilin' [7:25]
2 Every Minute Counts [6:50]
3 Smooth Sailin' [6:47]

This is Gabor Szabo's "Concorde (Nightflight)", recorded for the Club Date TV program in 1977 and included as part of Carlos Santana's video "Influences":

And another great song, Breezin from the High Contrast album, on YouTube. Same session.

This is Gabor Szabo performing "The Biz" at the Budapest Hilton Hotel in 1978 during a visit back to his native land. The original version of this song by Bobby Lyle appears on the Szabo's 1977 album, Faces. This performance was broadcast on Hungarian television in 1978. What synthesizer is played here?

The best rock band I've never seen.
An 8'20" instrumental version of O Type can be found on the cd Das Love Boat.
This 7" version is split in two parts, with vocals. On Ralph records.

Mike Hankinson - The Unusual Classical Synthesizer (1972, UK/US, electronic/classical)
Wednesday, March 14, 2007, 08:45 PM - Music, - UK, - US, English
Mike Hankinson was born in Great Britain and lives in South Africa, but this lp was produced in the United States. I got the mp3's and scans from a visitor, who was so kind to allow me to share them.

from the sleeve notes:
This record is the first L.P. ever recorded using only the Electronic Music Studios "Synthi" VCS-3. This instrument has the capability of producing virtually any sound, but was used purely as a straight musical instrument on this L.P. The only modification - a potentiometer control was added, which gave a sliding octave up or down, by rotating the control, thus extending the keyboard to 5 octaves.

Side one:
1 Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Bach) [7:05]
2 Variations - Mein junges Leben hat ein End (Sweelinck) [3:29]
3 Sonata in D major (Scarlatti) [2:46]
4 Sonata Rondo (Clementi) [3:20]

Side two:
1 Concerto in A minor (Bach) [2:59]
2 Eine kleine Nachtmusik (Mozart) [3:37]
3 Italian Concerto (Bach) [3:37]
4 Moonlight Sonata (Beethoven) [5:08]
