Mike Hankinson - The Unusual Classical Synthesizer (1972, UK/US, electronic/classical)
Wednesday, March 14, 2007, 08:45 PM - Music, - UK, - US, English
Mike Hankinson was born in Great Britain and lives in South Africa, but this lp was produced in the United States. I got the mp3's and scans from a visitor, who was so kind to allow me to share them.

from the sleeve notes:
This record is the first L.P. ever recorded using only the Electronic Music Studios "Synthi" VCS-3. This instrument has the capability of producing virtually any sound, but was used purely as a straight musical instrument on this L.P. The only modification - a potentiometer control was added, which gave a sliding octave up or down, by rotating the control, thus extending the keyboard to 5 octaves.

Side one:
1 Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Bach) [7:05]
2 Variations - Mein junges Leben hat ein End (Sweelinck) [3:29]
3 Sonata in D major (Scarlatti) [2:46]
4 Sonata Rondo (Clementi) [3:20]

Side two:
1 Concerto in A minor (Bach) [2:59]
2 Eine kleine Nachtmusik (Mozart) [3:37]
3 Italian Concerto (Bach) [3:37]
4 Moonlight Sonata (Beethoven) [5:08]

Blueprint - Prototypes (1980, UK/CA, pub rock/new wave)
Tuesday, March 6, 2007, 07:50 PM - Music, - CA, - UK, English
Prototypes was a sampler by the Blueprint label. On it, 2 songs each of four acts: Fabulous Poodles, Karel Fialka, The Crooks and B.B.Gabor. The bands had not much in common and Blueprint was not a success and disappeared soon.
I personally like the dark synthesizer work of Karel Fialka the best.

Side one:
1 Fabulous Poodles - Mirror Star [4:25]
2 Fabulous Poodles - Pink City Twist [2:17]
3 Karel Fialka - Armband [3:27]
4 Karel Fialka - People are Strange (Doors cover) [3:02]

Side two:
1 The Crooks - Modern Boys [2:45]
2 The Crooks - Sound of Today [2:46]
3 B.B. Gabor - Soviet Jewellery [2:35]
4 B.B. Gabor - All the Time [5:02]

The Donkeys - Don't Go - Let's Float (1980-1981, UK, power pop)
Thursday, March 1, 2007, 07:22 PM - Music, - UK, English
I must admit, it was a little disappointment when I heard this again. In my mind the Donkeys were excellent, but they are only quite good. A bit like the Jam in the early days. I like the close harmony singing.
I have, and post, the two last singles (from four) they released.
Later they released two singles under the name Donkees.
You can get them on cd.

1 Don't Go
2 Living Legends
3 Let's Float
4 Strike Talks

You can download the first single What I Want/Four Letters at 7 inch punk (size does matter).

Genesis - As Though Emerald City (1975, UK, symphonic rock)
Wednesday, February 21, 2007, 07:29 PM - Music, - UK, English
Live at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, one of the largest theaters in the United States.

From their The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway period.
Side one is mainly work from this double lp, side two consists of the Musical Box plus two studio recordings: Happy the Man , a single from 1972 (released between Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot) and Twilight Alehouse, 1974, the b-side of I Know What You Like In Your Wardrobe, a single taken from the album Selling England by the Pound.

"The live portions of this album will provide a quadraphonic sound when played on equipment utilizing the QS Matrix Decoding System."  WOW ! But what is it?
It is one of the many early attempts to get quadraphonic sound out of a stereo recording, based on phase shifting, to distinguish between what should be heard on the front and back speakers. The encoding was license free, but only Sansui sold decoding systems.

Side one:
1 Watcher of the Skies [7:57]
2 Lilywhite Lilith - The Wating Room - Anyway - It! [17:12]

Side two:
1 The Musical Box [11:38]
2 Happy the Man [2:54]
3 Twilight Ale House [7:50]

Wednesday, February 14, 2007, 07:45 PM - Music, - UK, English
This single lacks the lonely sheep. But there is some sad singing on the b-side.

1 Main theme
2 I think it's going to rain today

1 Spell Bound [2:34]
2 Blood & Lipstick [3:54]
3 Clown Town [4:56]
4 I Cry [6:03]
